Summary:

This position performs all routine and complicatedlaboratory procedures including specimen processing and handling,testing of patient specimens, calculating, and reporting ofresults, performance of quality control procedures, operation andmaintenance of instruments and equipment, assisting in thedevelopment of new procedures and protocols, may perform phlebotomyand other patient-oriented tasks, and may perform other relatedduties as requested or directed.

TheCHRISTUS Children's Hospital, established in 1959, was the firstchildren's hospital in South-Central Texas. Located downtown, this190-plus-bed hospital serves more than 70,000 children annuallyfrom San Antonio, South Texas and around the world. The hospital(in partnership with Baylor College of Medicine) is the onlyacademic children's hospital in San Antonio. Our highly specializedservices meet the unique medical needs of children, from Pediatricand Neonatal Intensive Care to Children's Emergency Services, thelatest treatments for deformities of the spine including titaniumrib implants and halo traction, a Heart Center, a specializedasthma program, a highly regarded Cancer and Blood DisordersCenter, and growing maternal services to include consultation,delivery, and maternal fetal medicine.

Responsibilities:

Meets expectations of the applicable OneCHRISTUSCompetencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader ofLeaders.
Performs all routine and complicatedlaboratory procedures in the primary section to which assignedabout age or sex specific values.
Operates,maintains, and troubleshoots laboratory instrumentation andequipment and makes minor repairs as necessary or notifies Bio-medas needed.
Must cross-train to other laboratorysections as needed.
Assures that the laboratory'squality control program is properly followed.
Calculates, enters, and/or verifies results of laboratoryprocedures.
Utilizes the Laboratory InformationSystem.
Provides notification and documentation ofcritical laboratory values obtained.
Processespatient specimens, including collection, handling, and distributionalways cognizant of minimal pediatric specimen volumes (whenrequired).
Participates in the evaluation,development, and implementation of new or updated testingprocedures and protocols.
Demonstrates competence toperform assigned patient care responsibilities in a manner thatmeets the population-specific and developmental needs of patientsserved by the department.
Appropriately adaptsassigned patient assessment, treatment, and/or care methods toaccommodate the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, agespecific and other developmental needs of each patient served.
Demonstrates adherence to the CORE values of CHRISTUSHealth.
Must complete all required compliance andregulatory tasks and follow all applicable policies andprocedures.
Performs other duties asassigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in a chemical,physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medicaltechnology from an accredited institution or equivalent laboratorytraining and experience meeting the requirements defined in theCLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489 (includes U. S. Military laboratorytraining courses of at least 50 weeks)OR Education that has been evaluated by anacceptable credentialing agency and deemed equivalent to a USBachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinicallaboratory science or medical technology.
  • Oneyear of experience required for graduates of a clinical laboratorytraining program approved or accredited by NAACLS, or otherorganizations approved by HHS. OR Two yearsof approved clinical laboratory experience, which must include aclinical rotation through the following sections of the laboratory:Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, and Hematology, Immunology,and Urinalysis/Body Fluids in the U. S. or with an accreditedlaboratory within the last 5years OR 5 years of experience as aMedical Laboratory Technician (MLT II cannot move to a CLSII).
  • Must possess Certification for MT, MLS,CLS, or MLT from ASCP, AMT, AAB, or HEW/HHS.
  • If certification with an expiration dateis held, the certification must be maintained and keptcurrent.
  • New Graduate that is Board Certifiedor eligible (must complete Board Certification in 1 year of hire,Louisiana excluded)
